Volgograd Oblast, Ilovlinsky District, ca. 4 km to SE from Kachalino railway station, flat plot on a left side of a deep ravine which is going to the Don River, distance between plots ca. 200 m; Steppe communities dominated by Festuca valesiaca, Stipa lessingiana and Stipa capillata with some Artemisia austriaca, Galatella villosa (Festuco-Brometea), 60–70% of plant covering, soil could be classified as kastanozem (following WRB), site is an open subhorizontal watershed surface on a left side of a deep ravine; Plot #2 (VOLy) is also situated on the edge of the ravine escarp on a gentle (ca. 5°) north-faced slope; grasses are a bit taller and well-developed due to more humid conditions than at plot #1; soil is less developed due to surface washout (ancient alluvial underlying sand is present near the surface); vegetation could be classified as a typical (zonal) dry steppe; Dominants: Stipa lessingiana, Stipa capillata and less abundant Festuca valesiaca. Other remarkable species is Galatella villosa. The plot was influenced by a fire a decade ago. Some rubbish from the neighboring camping place which is active 5 days a year in June. |
