Site is situated on an even surface approx. 2km east from the “Le Dégrad Saint Antoine”, which is a small indigenous village directly situated at the banks of river Orapu. Young secondary rainforest with two layers. All trees of the first layer have a diameter of less than 80cm, 80% most of them a diameter of less than 50 cm. Old banana palms are loosely distributed in the area as a sign of its former use as a plantation. Tree-canopy cover is 75-80%. Surrounding area is covered by plantations and primary rainforest on even terrain. Rich litter layer (3-5cm) and minimal humus layer (<1cm) are present. Soil-layer is less stony but rich in clay. Cut and burned in small scale approx. 5-10 years ago and afterwards extensively used to grow tropical fruits there. Now already totally overgrown again but banana palms as relicts are still present. |
